Offaly journalist James Mulhall joins Irish Post news team

Co. Offaly journalist James Mulhall has joined The Irish Post newsroom as a reporter this week.

James will be based in the newspaper’s London office having moved here from Dublin, where he was based for the past year as a freelance journalist.

Originally from Walsh Island in Co. Offaly, James studied at NUI Galway and the University of Ulster. Having cut his teeth in the industry in student media, he was selected to cover the Irish presidency of the EU in 2013 as a citizen journalist.

He has previously held roles with the Laois Nationalist and SpunOut.ie and more recently worked in radio with Kfm in Co. Kildare and multi-city radio station 4fm.

Irish Post Editor Siobhán Breatnach said: “We are delighted to welcome James to The Irish Post and to London. With experience of both community and online journalism, we know he will be a great addition to the newsroom as we strive to cover the stories that matter most to the Irish in Britain.”

While James is the first of his generation of his family to leave Irish shores, the road to Britain is a familiar path.

His maternal grandparents moved to Birmingham in the 1960s where his mother was born, before returning to Ireland when she was a child. Many of his family still live in the Midlands today.

The Irish language is one of James’ main interests and, despite being an amateur, he continues to build on his standard.

James is also a former GAA player, having taken an early retirement aged 21, when he moved to the North of Ireland for his studies.
