LONDON Irish boss Tom Coventry has warned his players not to panic as the team continues to battle to avoid relegation.

The Exiles suffered a 47-20 defeat on Sunday against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road, leaving them bottom of the Aviva Premiership table.

Richard Cockerill’s men ended their three-game losing run, scoring seven tries with a clinical attacking display.

Securing the try bonus point by virtue of scores from Adam Thompstone, Harry Thacker, Lachlan McCaffrey and Jonno Kitto, Leicester established a comfortable 26-3 half-time lead, leaving the Exiles with a tough task in the second period.

Leicester got the scoring underway with a Thompstone try, before an impressive effort from hooker Thacker. Try number three came from flanker McCaffrey and on the stroke of half-time Kitto extended the hosts’ lead.

Irish began the second-half with determination, demonstrating impressive attacking flair to run in three tries through David Paice, Joe Trayfoot and Andrew Fenby.

Despite their best efforts, Leicester responded with Tom Croft, Jean de Villiers and Thompstone adding to the scoreline.

Speaking after the game, Coventry said: “We need to get points out of the game when we’re away and obviously we haven’t been able to do that all year so that’s pretty tough.

“But we have a fair few games to go and we have to manage ourselves through the season and not panic.”
