WATCH: Aslan's Christy Dignam performs moving rendition of Down by the Salley Gardens

ASLAN lead singer Christy Dignam performed a moving version of Down by the Salley Gardens on Friday's Late Late Show.

The star, 61, was on the show to promote his first solo album, The Man Who Stayed Alive.

Dignam, who also spoke about his battle with the incurable disease amyloidosis, said he wanted to leave a personal musical legacy after he passed away.

"I love Aslan but I just wanted to see if I'd be capable of doing a solo album," he told Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy.

"You want something to live after you're dead.

"We [Aslan] have Crazy World and stuff like that which are great, amazing songs, but they're the band's — I don't feel like I own them.

"I wanted to do something personal where my life is at the moment."

As well as Down by the Salley Gardens — the lyrics of which come from the WB Yeats poem — Dignam performed High, one of the tracks from his new album.

The new record also includes a song dedicated to Dignam's wife Kathryn, which features vocals from Imelda May.

Dignam paid tribute to his wife on the Late Late Show for standing by him throughout some tough times.

"If I'm being honest Ryan, there were times in our marriage that I wasn't the husband that I should have been," said Dignam.

"I was doing things that I shouldn't have been doing and stuff like the drugs and all that carry on.

"She stuck with me through thick and thin and I remember thinking, 'If we flipped this and she was doing what I was doing, would I tolerate that?'"
