New nationwide competition is looking for the most eligible bachelor in Ireland

DID SOMEONE specific jump into your mind when you read that title? Could it even be yourself? If so, read on...

A nationwide competition is being set up to find Ireland's most eligible bachelor for an event which is marketing itself as "the male equivalent of the Rose of Tralee".

The annual St Patrick's Weekend in Mullingar is attempting to put itself firmly on the map by ramping up its Westmeath Bachelor Competition to draw people in on a national scale, with the aim of eventually becoming a televised show to rival the Rose of Tralee.

Limerick Rose Sinéad Flanagan won the 2019 edition of The Rose of Tralee (Twitter: The Rose of Tralee)

The organisers are looking for a winner who is 'polished, poised, has a social conscience and is able to represent themselves on a national stage' (no pressure, lads) and will be judged by a panel of celebrities including former X-Factor judge Louis Walsh.

Entries are open to men from across the country and abroad, and 12 eligible bachelors will be hand-chosen to battle it out on the stage (Miss Universe style rather than Gladiator style, we think).

And the top prize isn't half bad: €2,000 worth of shopping in Mullingar, a holiday worth €1,000, €500 for a charity of the winner's choice, the coveted Westmeath Bachelor Trophy piece-- and of course, the prestigious title of Westmeath Bachelor 2020.

Like the Rose of Tralee's male chaperones, the Westmeath Bachelor Competition is also searching for 12 lovely girls to accompany the finalists, and the best dressed of those women will also receive 'a hefty prize' on the night.
