Irish community to come together to transform family home for girl following life-changing accident

A CLOSE-KNIT community in County Limerick are preparing to band together to transform the home and lives of the Mulcahy family after their daughter suffered an accident which left the family home unsuitable for her needs.

In February 2019, 12-year-old Amy Mulcahy was training with her rowing club on the river Shannon when the boat capsized, trapping her underneath for almost ten minutes.

Miraculously, Limerick's Fire & Recue Service were also training on the river at the time and came to Amy's aid, managing to rescue her and all the other children, and resuscitating Amy on the banks of the Shannon.

The young athlete, who was an avid rower, was rushed to hospital, where her parents heard the devastating news that Amy had suffered cardiac arrest and severe brain damage from the accident-- but Amy's mother, Sharon, knew her daughter was a fighter.

Bit by bit and day by day, now-13-year-old Amy has defied the oddds at every turn and is on the long road to recovery, but her life-changing accident now means that the family's home in Anacotty, County Limerick, is no longer suitable to her needs.

But the community is going to change that.

DIY SOS: The Big Build have announced that they will be making their way to Limerick in February and have reached out to the community "to help us transform the Mulcahy's house into not just a comfortable and safe family home, but also a practical one for Amy".

An appeal has been launched for anybody who can help -- tradespeople, suppliers, volunteers, anyone who can lend a hand in transforming the family home is urged to get in touch.

"We have just 9 Days to transform Amy's house," a spokesperson for the show wrote on Facebook.

"And we know with all your help, hard work, dedication & support we can change The Mulcahy Family's life forever."

If you are in the area and want to help to change the lives of a well-deserving family, you can email [email protected] with your contact information and how you wish to help.
