Gardaí investigate anti-mask protesters who allegedly abused and mocked passengers on Dublin tram

GARDAÍ HAVE launched an investigation into an anti-mask protest which took place on a Dublin tram earlier this month.

At the beginning of November, we reported on a group of people who had boarded the Luas without face coverings, which is mandatory on all public transport in Ireland under current Covid-19 restrictions.

The group, made up of at least 20 people, then began to act "unruly and offensively", abusing other passengers and mocking them for wearing masks.

A video of the incident was widely shared on social media, having originally been uploaded by one of the protesters himself.

The video was part of a four-hour livestream by the man, who had boasted that he had flown into Dublin Airport from abroad just hours before the Luas protest.

The group had allegedly been seen protesting at the Health Service Executive shortly before boarding the Luas between Heuston Station and Jervis Street.

The group boarded the Luas at Heuston station, and began acting in an "unruly and offensive" manner towards other passengers

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses into the anti-social behaviour to come forward.

In a statement seen by The Irish Times, A Garda spokesperson said:

"The incident occurred at approximately 4.30pm and was shared on social media when a group of individuals travelled on the Luas Red line, wearing no face coverings and engaged in unruly and offensive behaviour towards other passengers."

Anyone with information which can assist the investigation, including any witnesses who were travelling on the Luas Red Line on the date and time in question, is asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 666 9400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
