Two Irish women live tweet their journey from Ireland to an abortion clinic in Britain

AN Irish Twitter account highlighting the journey of two Irish women to the UK to have an abortion trended worldwide this weekend.

'Two Women Travel' was set up on Friday evening ahead of the journey made by the two women on Saturday morning to an abortion clinic in an undisclosed location in Britain.

The women, who remained anonymous, live tweeted their experience to over 23,000 followers – from departing Dublin airport on Saturday morning to the clinic until they arrived back in Ireland on Sunday evening.

The objective was "to stand in solidarity with all women exiled by Enda Kenny", a reference to the Taoiseach's stance on the abortion issue in Ireland.

In order to draw the journey to the Taoiseach's attention, the ladies referenced @EndaKennyTD in every tweet.

There have been repeated calls in Ireland to repeal the eighth amendment of the Irish Constitution, which says, "The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right."

Under current Irish legislation, women cannot have an abortion in Ireland and many travel to Britain to have the procedure.

Over 4,000 Irish women travelled to the UK to have an abortion in 2015.

Last week, The Irish Post shared the stories of Irish women appealing to the Abortion Support Network for help. Read them here.

The final tweet read:

"Everyday at least 12 Irish women are exiled to clinics in the UK to procure an abortion [...] we wanted to share the very ordinariness of the situation - we wanted to show it for what it is; a series of waiting rooms, moments in transit, a sequence of tediums protracted by stigma. No filters, no monologues, just the facts."

"We had to travel because our government insists that we pretend this isn't happening [...] Our journey ends here tonight but the struggle for our reproductive freedom continues."

"We make this journey in stern solidarity with all our Irish sisters who have gone before us."
