American Airlines flight forced to divert to Ireland after 'engine shuts down' over Atlantic

A FLIGHT from Paris to Miami has been forced to divert to Shannon Airport after one of the jet's engines shut down.

American Airlines flight AA63 departed Charles de Gualle Airport shortly after 11am this morning for the 10-hour journey to Florida.

However, around two hours after take-off the Boeing 777 plane reportedly lost power to its starboard engine and a general emergency was declared on board.

The flight was forced to turn back over the Atlantic Ocean and head for Ireland.

The jet arrived on the ground at Shannon Airport shortly after 2.30pm this afternoon with its right-hand engine (number two) disabled.

Shannon Airport Fire and Rescue Service personnel followed the aircraft to stand 42 where passengers were expected to exit the plane at around 3pm.

Flight crew requested inspection of the faulty engine for anything unusual or a fuel leak, according to FlightAlerts.

The incident comes after Shannon Airport received two diversions in a single day earlier this week.

On Tuesday, a British Airways flight from Washington Dulles to London Heathrow was forced to make an emergency landing at the Irish airport due to a "medical situation" involving a female passenger.

Flight BA292 landed at Shannon at 10.05am local time and the woman was rushed to hospital in Limerick.

Just minutes later at 10.19am, a WOW Air flight from Reykjavik in Iceland diverted to the airport after severe winds prevented a safe landing at Dublin Airport.

Flight WW6 refueled at Shannon before returning to Dublin at 11.54am.
