St Patrick's celebrations took on a mythical theme in Liverpool yesterday

ST PATRICK’S Day celebrations took on a mythical edge in Liverpool yesterday when Dr Clare Downham gave a slice of Irish history to punters at an Irish pub in the city centre.

Revellers at Shenanigans Irish Pub in Tithebarn Street, who were out to mark Ireland’s national day, enjoyed a talk on the history and myths associated with Saint Patrick by Dr Downham – a senior lecturer at the Institute of Irish Studies based at the University of Liverpool.

Conor McDonald, the Dublin born owner of the popular Irish bar, claimed he was delighted to have Dr Downham and colleagues from the Institute at the bar to join their celebrations, which also offered live Irish music on the day.

The talk was Dr Downham’s second marking St Patrick’s Day 2015.

Earlier this month she presented a lecture on The Battle of Clontarf in Irish History and Legend for the Annual Irish Studies Conference at the Irish World Heritage Centre in Manchester.

That event, which took place on March 7, was among the first from the city’s two week St Patrick’s festival.
