Dublin hotel prices shoot up around St Patrick's Day events in the capital

HOTEL prices in Dublin have shot up ahead of the St Patrick’s Day festivities, with a one night stay in the capital costing 86 per cent more than usual next week.

Data compiled by hotel comparison website trivago.ie showed that one night at a city centre hotel on March 16, the night before St Patrick’s Day, will cost an average of €182, compared to just €98 the following Monday.

Similarly, a one night stay on the day itself will cost an average of €178, a 76 per cent increase from the €101 price for the following Tuesday.

The website’s report shows prices are high in Dublin hotels for the duration of the week, where a variety of St Patrick’s themed events are taking place across the city.

Limerick is the only other Irish city that Trivago has found to have raised hotel prices over the St Patrick’s Day period.

There a hotel will cost an average of €88 a night between March 14 and 17 – boasting a more moderate 14 per cent increase from the monthly average of €77.

Trivago’s John Pilkington told The Irish Post: “Hoteliers are routinely criticised for their St Patrick’s Day price hikes – in 2013 hotels in Dublin received a public backlash when prices increased by 173 per cent. With prices increasing by a maximum average of 86 per cent this year, perhaps a wider range of visitors can enjoy the range of celebrations across the city.”
