Young Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers scores last minute bullet header for Bournemouth

HE THEN went on to save two penalties in the same game, which was a cup final. Scenes.

Mark Travers didn't have the best of starts to 2021.

He was chosen by Stephen Kenny to start in goal against Serbia at just 21 years of age, and didn't get on too well.

He only got his chance due to injuries suffered by Darren Randolph and Caoimhín Kelleher, and made a fatal error that led to a goal for Serbia in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

But as all great goalkeepers do, he has bounced back, and he has done so in some style.

In a game for Bournemouth's under 21s, Travers was starting in goal, and scored a last minute equaliser to send the Hampshire Senior Cup to penalties.

And to make it all the sweeter, it was another Irishman, Gavin Kilkenny - scorer of Bournemouth's other goal - whose put the cross in.

And as if that wasn't enough, he also saved a couple of penalties in the shootout, helping Bournemouth win the trophy for the first time in 32 years.

Take a bow, son.

After the game, Travers said he simply thought "Why not?", before going up for the corner and heading it home.

We hope that we haven't seen the last of Travers in the Ireland setup, as he is still only 21, and is clearly filled with confidence and ability.
