Willie Maher leaves post as Laois senior hurling manager

Laois senior hurling manager Willie Maher has stepped down from his role this week.

The Tipperary native helped the Leinster side reach Division 1 of the Allianz League this year, and they also reached the Joe McDonagh Cup final. However, Maher has left his post.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my position as Manager of the Laois Senior Hurling Team, effective immediately,” Maher said in a statement on Laois GAA's website.

“This decision was not made lightly, but after much reflection, I believe it is the right time for me to step away at this point. I am proud of what we achieved together during my tenure and grateful for the dedication and hard work of the players, coaching staff, and supporters.

“A special thank you to Eamon Jackman and Sean Flynn, who, apart from being exceptionally innovative and brilliant coaches, provided me with sound counsel and advice through the challenges and opportunities that come with managing and achieving high performance with an elite group of sportsmen. Our Strength and Conditioning Coach, David Moriarty, was a super addition to our team in 2024, and the players benefited considerably in their athletic development."

Maher has also claimed that O'Moore County is in a great place to kick off in 2025.

“By winning Division 2 in 2024, we have earned the right to play in Division 1 hurling in 2025 and are a puck of a ball away from a return to the Leinster Senior Championship. The transition of seven new players into the McDonagh final team is testament to the quality of players coming through in Laois, and I have no doubt that the team is set up for success with all players available in the county committing to our senior panel in 2024," he added.

Maher ended the statement by thanking players and staff for their efforts.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the players, the backroom team, the county board, and, of course, supporters for their unwavering support during my tenure. It has been a privilege to manage such a talented and committed group and to be a part of the wonderful Laois Hurling community.

“Finally, I would like to thank my family and the families of all involved in the Laois senior hurling playing and back-room teams. Your support and understanding allow us all the opportunity to compete to the highest standards of performance. We appreciate it and the impact it has on our loved ones.

“I wish the team every success in the future and will always remain a passionate supporter of Laois hurling.
