The new National Head of Hurling for the GAA has been appointed, with former Tipperary minor manager William Maher taking up the role.
Maher has extensive experience as a coach and team manager at both club and county levels, having worked with teams in Tipperary, Waterford, Dublin, Laois, and Kilkenny. A Ballingarry club man, he captained Tipperary to an All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship win in 1996 and later managed the Tipp minors to the same title in 2012.
Speaking in a statement, Maher expressed his happiness and excitement about the opportunity to grow the game.
"Hurling has always played a hugely important role in my life. I am excited by the challenge of growing and sustaining the game and also exploring opportunities to work alongside the Camogie Association in the development of our games," said Maher via The Hogan Stand.

"I fully appreciate the magnitude of this role and how the needs of our hurling population vary across the country. I look forward to working alongside all stakeholders to fully develop our games."
GAA President Jarlath Burns added that he was delighted someone of Maher's pedigree and stature in the game had been appointed to the role. Burns emphasised the importance of getting the appointment right, as the role is vital for the growth of the game.
"I am delighted that a person of the calibre and experience of William Maher is to be our new National Head of Hurling," said Burns.
"This is a crucially important post that will be at the heart of our strategy to protect the game where it thrives and promote it where it needs to be nurtured and developed.
"Hurling is our national sport, acknowledged internationally by UNESCO. We are committed to ensuring that William and the HDC have the ability to make a significant impact and give as many people as possible the opportunity to play and enjoy this national treasure."
