Wexford and manager Egan go seperate ways

Wexford's Senior Hurling manager, Darragh Egan, will not continue in the role, confirmed Wexford GAA this week.

Egan took over from former manager Davy Fitzgerald in 2021. In his debut campaign, Egan and the team had a strong start, securing five wins in the National League and a Leinster SHC round-robin victory over Kilkenny, before experiencing defeat against Clare in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

However, in this year's championship campaign, the Slaneysiders suffered an unexpected setback, experiencing a shock defeat to Westmeath. Wexford narrowly avoided relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup.

In what turned out to be Egan's final match in charge of the Model men, they managed to secure a hard-fought victory against Kilkenny, who had already reached the Leinster final. Nonetheless, the county board made a decisive announcement on Monday, stating that Egan's term as manager would not be extended.

The statement read, "Wexford GAA wish to announce that, following the completion of a comprehensive review of the 2023 season, it has been decided not to extend Darragh Egan's initial two-year term as Senior Hurling Manager.

"Wexford GAA wish to acknowledge and thank Darragh for the enormous efforts he and his backroom team have made since his appointment in September 2021 and wish them all well for the future.

"The process to appoint a new Senior Hurling Manager will now commence."
