THERE may be plenty going on behind the scenes at Team Ireland’s base in Rio for the Olympics, but the mood seems fairly relaxed from here.
That’s because the athletes have been filmed chilling out, playing pool and, of course, watching Father Ted, from the comfort of their communal area in the Olympic Village.
Team Ireland have already been in the headlines following Michael O’Reilly’s failed drugs test, but by Saturday afternoon they’ll be competing for medals, with female rower Sanita Puspure up first at 12.30pm.
Big-name cyclists Dan Martin and Nicholas Roche follow at 1.30pm in the road race, with the former hopeful of a medal on the day as the course suits his strengths.
Kieran Behan is in action in gymnastics at 2.30pm, while the men’s hockey team face India at 3pm, the same time as boxers Paddy Barnes, Joel Ward and David Oliver begin their campaigns in the preliminaries.
The excitement surrounding the build-up doesn’t appear to be troubling this lot though - they’re happy enough watching Father Ted amid the calm before the storm...
