Tipperary's Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher retires

Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher has retired from the Tipperary senior hurling team.

Maher played for his native county for 16 years, and during that time, he won three Liam McCarthy titles in 2010, 2016, and 2019, and five Munster titles (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016). He was also rewarded for his stellar performances with two All-Star awards in 2014 and 2016.

Writing on the Tipperary GAA website, Maher confirmed he is stepping away from hurling for good.

"After 16 years as a Tipperary senior hurler, I have decided that the time is right for me to announce my retirement from inter-county hurling," Maher said.

"It has been a dream come true for me to have had the privilege and honour to wear the Tipperary jersey.

"I want to thank each and every player I had the opportunity to share the dressing room with. I will cherish the friendships made over the years and all the great memories."

In the twilight of his career, Maher suffered an ACL and an Achilles tendon rupture, which have contributed to his departure from the Tipperary team at the age of 34.

The statement went on to thank numerous individuals who helped him become the star he became. This included the management teams, the supporters, and his family.

"To the Tipperary supporters, it has been an honour to represent you on the field. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support. I look forward to joining you in the stands to cheer on Tipperary in the years to come," added the Lorrha clubman.

"To the Tipperary team in 2025, I wish you the very best and look forward to cheering you on. Tipp Abú."

In the same statement, Tipperary GAA thanked their former player. They acknowledged Maher for his contribution to the team and wished him well in the future.

"Tipperary GAA wish to thank Patrick for his outstanding commitment to the blue and gold jersey throughout his career and for the many great memories he has left us with. Patrick contributed in no small way to some of Tipperary’s greatest days, and on behalf of all Tipperary supporters, we wish him the very best of good fortune in the future."
