Thomas Bjorn: 'I hope Rory McIlroy ends his major drought soon'

Ex-Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn is hopeful that Rory McIlroy can end his major drought sooner rather than later.

McIlroy has had a phenomenally successful career, with many victories on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. He has won multiple major championships, including the U.S. Open (2011), the Open Championship (2014), and the PGA Championship (2012, 2014). Along with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, he is one of three players to win four majors by the age of 25.

However, he has not won one since 2014, and he has been trying ever since to end his major hoodoo.

Despite entering 33 tournaments since his last victory, he has experienced a series of close calls at events like the Augusta Masters.

Throughout his career spanning 58 majors, he boasts four victories, three second-place finishes, and four third-place finishes, along with a total of 17 top-five and 29 top-10 placements.

In the past, legendary golfers like Jack Nicklaus have claimed McIlroy's major drought is a "mystery" to many but have backed him to end it.

Bjorn also expressed that sentiment and believes that McIlroy is one of the best players in the world when he is in full swing.

"I hope Rory McIlroy ends his major's drought soon. I can tell when he's in full swing. When he is, he's arguably the best player in the world.

"Rory has been a dominant figure in golf for so many years, and I want him to win major tournaments. He's won four of them, but I'd like to finish with more than that!

"I can see him winning majors in the future, and I hope he does."

McIlroy has also become the de facto face of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour since LIV Golf's inception in 2022. An outspoken critic of the breakaway league, McIlroy has not been afraid to give the Saudi-led project his two cents on more than one occasion.

Bjorn only wants McIlroy to concentrate on his golf game, and he thinks that is what he is currently doing.

"Rory has been heavily involved in the game for so long, but he's taken a step back and put himself outside of the decision-making on the PGA Tour, and it seems like he's been concentrating on his golf.

"You never know what makes people tick. Some people play better by being involved, whereas others shine when they're not. Rory always seems to have opinions on things, sometimes strong ones, and I'm not sure how that affects him. I just know he's a hugely talented golfer, and I want him to play at the highest level. He's so enjoyable to watch."
