Steven Reid announces retirement

BURNLEY midfielder Steven Reid has announced his retirement at the end of this season.

The 34-year-old has made seven appearances this campaign after arriving from West Brom on a free transfer last July.

The former Republic of Ireland international has almost reached 400 club appearances in his 17-year career, that has seen him also play for Millwall and Blackburn Rovers.

He also earned 23 international caps, including two appearances at the 2002 World Cup.

In a statement, Reid confirmed: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from professional football at the end of the 2014/15 season.

“Alongside the great memories there have also been the many lows of my well-documented injuries and I feel the time has now come to listen to my body.

“I’m excited about new challenges ahead,” he added. “I'm working towards my ‘A’ licence and look forward to pursuing a career in coaching, alongside continuing the media work I've enjoyed this season.

“I would like to thank everybody that has been a part of the journey: My family, especially, but also the fans, players, staff, managers and friends that have made it a truly wonderful 17 years.”
