'Stay strong Sean' – Thousands raised for Irish dad left fighting for his life after Anfield attack

FOOTBALL fans have come together to raise thousands for an Irish Liverpool fan who is fighting for his life after an attack outside Anfield last night.

Father-of-two Sean Cox, 53, remains in a critical condition less than 24 hours after he was assaulted with belts by Roma fans outside the Albert Pub near the stadium at 7.35pm.

Mr Cox and his brother had travelled to Anfield from their native Co. Meath to watch Liverpool's Champions League semi-final against the Italian club.

The Irishman suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Walton Neurological Centre – where his wife remains at his bedside this evening.

Two Italian men, aged 25 and 26, were arrested inside the ground on suspicion of attempted murder.

Fellow Irish LFC fan Emmet Kavanagh has now set up an online fundraising effort to contribute towards Mr Cox's medical expenses.

He wrote: “On Tuesday 24th April, a fellow Liverpool fan from Ireland (Sean Cox) was badly attacked outside Anfield before the Champions League Semi Final.

“I had decided to set up this page to help raise funds to cover Sean’s medical expenses and expenses incurred by his family to help them to stay by his side.

"I have been in contact with a family member and they are aware that we are raising money.

“Once the money is raised I plan on withdrawing it by cheque/bank draft and presenting it to either Sean and/or his family.”

The JustGiving page has already raised over €5,000 just hours after it was set up.

A second fundraising effort has also been launched on GoFundMe by fellow supporter Stephen Moss.

One donor wrote: “Football violence has no colours. I wish the best for him and his families. £5 in from an Evertonian.”

Another said: “We support you, stay strong and get well soon! You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
