A report from Sport Ireland has stated that female representation on the boards of sports organisations in Ireland has increased by 3% since its last report in April. The percentage of women on sporting sector boards now stands at 48%.
This report covers 100 sports organisations, including National Governing Bodies (NGBs), Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs), and bodies like the Olympic Federation of Ireland, Paralympics Ireland, and Active Disability Ireland.
The 3% increase means that, for the first time ever in Ireland, all Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) have exceeded their target of 40% female representation. Regarding 71 National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) and other funded organisations, 65 of these have achieved or exceeded the 40% target, with the remaining organisations actively working to meet this goal.
These initiatives are part of Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Policy, launched in 2019, when female board representation was at a low of 24%. The policy forms part of the Ggovernments Sports Action Plan, which requires all funded organisations to meet the 40% target. Organisations failing to comply can only access half of their 2025 funding until they reach the required level.
