Shane Lowry has been appointed as a new member of the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council

IRELAND'S SHANE LOWRY has been given a role on the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council this week.

The Clara native is one of 14 golf players still on the traditional PGA and DP World Tours, who have been given a role.

The PAC advises and consults with the PGA TOUR Policy Board (Board of Directors) and Commissioner Jay Monahan on issues affecting the TOUR.

The PGA and DP World Tour golfers have been in a long-drawn out civil war with the breakaway league known as LIV Golf.

LIV Golf have managed to attract some of the world's best golfers to their events in their debut year. Huge cash incentives were used to attract the likes of Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, and many others.

Lowry and Rory Mcllroy are two of the biggest critics of the breakaway league and in 2022 didn't hide their displeasure of LIV Golf.

Lowry, speaking as a new member of PAC today said, “I still think that this Tour has grown."

"With the PGA Tour alliance and prize-money guaranteed to grow over the next 13 years every year, I think that's good for the Tour.

"I think it's sustainable, which is the big thing. I think having a sustainable product is something that you need to have, and I do think this Tour has that.

“Like I said, I think we got side-tracked into thinking that $100 million is just normal. Everybody is throwing out these figures that are just astronomical.

“Could this Tour be better? Yeah, obviously, we could all be better in anything that we do. But, with a steady growth over the next number of years, I do think this Tour will keep improving.

“Look, as a group of players on the DP World Tour, it's up to us to pass the Tour on to the next generation and it’s the same on the PGA Tour.

“I think that's what's important for golf over the next while, and that's why I'm happy to be involved in the PAC and I'm quite passionate about where golf is going and what's right for the game over the next while.”

Rory McIlroy is the current PAC Chairman but the Player Directors have selected Maverick McNealy, Adam Scott and Kevin Streelman to run for PAC Chairman via election, which ends on February 13.

2023 Player Advisory Council: Ryan Armour, Sam Burns, Corey Conners, Rickie Fowler, Brice Garnett, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Mackenzie Hughes, Shane Lowry, Maverick McNealy, Keith Mitchell, Henrik Norlander, Scottie Scheffler, Adam Scott, Kevin Streelman and Will Zalatoris.
