Seamus Coleman: 'Only Tom Cannon can decide between England and Ireland'

Seamus Coleman has stated that only Tom Cannon can decide which country he wants to play for. Cannon has previously represented Ireland's U-21 sides and was called up to Stephen Kenny's senior squad in March. However, the sharpshooter from Preston declined the opportunity amid interest from England, his country of birth.

Speaking in March, Kenny said, "His agent is Kenny Moyes, and he just said, 'let's get this camp out of the way and we'll come and meet you and have a chat.'"

"He said, 'obviously England U21s have made an approach,' and he just needed some time to reflect on the situation and wanted to speak to me after the camp, to sit down and have a conversation."

Cannon, whose family is Irish, has not commented on the speculation surrounding his international future. Cannon's dilemma is reminiscent of Declan Rice and Jack Grealish's switch from Ireland to England. Both played for Ireland in younger age groups, but after England's advances, they chose to represent their country of birth.

Ireland is scheduled to face the Netherlands and France next month, and there is no guarantee that Cannon will be selected by Stephen Kenny for the two games in Dublin and France.

Currently on loan at Preston from Everton, Cannon knows Seamus Coleman from his time at the club. However, Ireland's captain has stated that he will not try to influence Cannon's decision toward Ireland.

"I’m not one of those people who will pull Tom aside, telling him to pick us," said Coleman at a Spar event this week.

“I’ve always said if you want to play for Ireland, great, but it’s entirely up to the individual.

“I don't know what kind of indication he's given Ireland, whether he’s said he doesn't want to play or not. I’ve not gone there with him."

Despite whatever he chooses, Coleman believes that the youngster will eventually make the right decision.

“The most important thing is having players who want to play. Tom is a great lad, and I'm sure over time, he'll make his decision.

“It would be great to have him because he's a good finisher.”
