Seamus Coleman donates £8,000 to help fans who cycled from Sligo to Liverpool reach target for homeless people

IRELAND captain Seamus Coleman has donated thousands of his own money to help fans who rode 230 miles from Sligo to Liverpool reach their target.

Coleman’s donation of £7,680 to the Everton Supports’ Club Cycle page took them over the £60,000 they had hoped to raise for the homeless.

The 23-strong group cycled from Sligo to Goodison Park in June to raise the money for the Everton in the Community homelessness project, Home Is Where The Heart Is.

The group travelled from their West of Ireland origin towards Dublin before heading across the Irish Sea by ferry to Holyhead on June 17.

They then headed around the coast of north Wales before finally descending onto Goodison Park.

However, after falling agonisingly short of raising their pre-set target, Coleman – who earns an estimated £50,000 a week at Everton – came to the rescue with his generous donation this week.

"Well done everyone involved with the fundraising!" Coleman posted on the group's JustGiving page on Wednesday.

"I'm glad that my donation helps with reaching the fundraising target of 60,000."

It’s not the first time the generous the Donegal native has donated to worthy causes.

He has raised tens of thousands for a number of charity projects close to his heart over the last 12 months.

The right back, who moved to Everton from Sligo Rovers for a fee of just £60,000 in 2009, took over from Robbie Keane as the Republic of Ireland skipper after the legendary striker’s international retirement last year.

Coleman is currently working his way back to fitness after he suffered a horror double leg while playing against Wales back in March.
