Roy Keane thinks Marcus Rashford needs an 'old-fashioned kick up the arse'

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes that Marcus Rashford needs some tough love to kickstart his form again.

Last year, Rashford had an excellent season, scoring 34 goals in all competitions, and this helped his boyhood club win the Carabao Cup and finish third in the league.

However, this year, after signing a new contract, the United forward has struggled to hit the heights set last campaign. He currently has eight goals in all competitions.

Many have questioned Rashford's desire and hunger to succeed at United this year. Appearances at Belfast nightclubs, clips of him walking around the pitch, and other sagas have been the story of his season.

Keane, who was never one to lack desire while playing for United, believes that Rashford, for whatever reason, is not enjoying his football at this moment.

The Cork native believes that someone, whether it be a family member or a teammate, should give him a kick up the backside to get him going again.

“There’s no question mark about his [Marcus Rashford’s] ability; he’s outstanding, but there’s something amiss with him," said Keane on the Overlap.

"We’ve had these conversations every few months—a player can have an off-spell or a dip, but he’s certainly not enjoying his football.

“I wouldn’t say I’m worried about him, but when you look at him, there’s something amiss. The people around him, whether it be family or his manager, who’s on his case every day. Who is giving him an old-fashioned kick up the arse and saying, "Come on, we need more from you?" If you want to be this leader and you’re on the big contracts, then there is that responsibility.

“I don’t think that is happening; I don’t think there is anybody in his case. That doesn’t mean he still can’t produce, and he should start running a bit more. He’s been at the club a long time, since he was a kid.”

Manchester United play Chelsea tonight. The game kicks off at 8:15 and can be seen live on TNT Sports.
