Pauw gives positive McCabe update ahead of World Cup opener

Republic of Ireland manager, Vera Pauw, has acknowledged that "there is no issue" regarding Katie McCabe's fitness ahead of the World Cup this month.

The Irish captain has had to endure the pain this season and even sustained a knock against France last Thursday night. The Dubliner was seen limping out of the game with an ankle injury after thirty minutes in the loss.

However, Vera Pauw has assured reporters at Ireland's training base in Meakin Park, Brisbane, that her captain is in good shape.

"There are no worries at all," said Pauw. "She participated in the last training session. Yesterday, we had a pool session, which is also part of our jet lag protocol," said the Ireland boss.

"It is all planned. The day before, we played 11-a-side on a very small pitch, and she went in with full power, full blocks, full sprints, so there is no issue with her."

Ireland will face co-hosts Australia in the first game on 20th July. When asked if Pauw had an idea of her team for the opening game in Sydney, the Ireland boss added that the match against France was crucial for squad preparation.

"We're very close to that. The France game was the key game in that. There could be a change, but that was the key match," added Pauw.

"It's only behind closed doors because we want to be able to change 11 players. If it's not, you can only change six players. We want to give all the players a good rhythm. Colombia has the same issue, and that's why we go behind closed doors. There's no other reason."

The session was attended by around 100 Irish supporters, with the significant diaspora expected to play a major role in supporting the Irish team as they faced the host side in Sydney.

"There's an incredible number of Irish people around."
