RORY McIlroy faces a race against time to be fit for his World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions tee-off time on Thursday having fallen ill after eating a dodgy sandwich in Shanghai.
Stomach pains forced McIlroy to pull out of his 10.45am (2.45am GMT) tee time on Wednesday and he now has until the same time on Thursday to recover.
“I just need another day of rest and hopefully I will be better tomorrow and I can play,” the world number three told reporters in China.
Prior to that, the Holywood native tweeted a picture of the hotel menu from which he ordered the sandwich that disagreed with him, but he was in high enough spirits to poke fun at himself at least.

While McIlroy recovers, the golf world is eagerly anticipating the Race to Dubai leader’s run-in with his new-found rival Jordan Spieth, who is currently sits just above him at number two in the rankings.
