O'Doherty dropped from Hallgrimsson Ireland squad, Luton's McGuinness in

Matt Doherty has been dropped from the Ireland squad by Heimir Hallgrimsson ahead of the Nations League games later this month.

The Icelandic native has selected his 24-man squad for the matches against Finland and Greece, choosing a very different side from the one that was beaten by both Greece and England in Dublin last month.

Luton Town centre-back Mark McGuinness receives his first call-up to the senior squad following his impressive form this season. Middlesbrough's Finn Azaz and Ipswich's Jack Taylor are also back in the Irish squad.

Aberdeen midfielder Jamie McGrath, West Bromwich Albion winger Mikey Johnston, Watford right-back Festy Ebosele, and Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen have also been recalled by Hallgrimsson. Will Smallbone fails to make the cut due to injury.

Hallgrimsson has chosen Caoimhín Kelleher, Mark Travers, and Max O’Leary as his goalkeeping options. Bazunu remains a long-term absentee.

Andrew Omobamidele, Nathan Collins, Dara O’Shea, Liam Scales, Callum O’Dowda, and Robbie Brady provide the defensive options. Jake O'Brien has struggled for game time with Everton and, like Doherty, has failed to make the squad for the trips to Helsinki and Athens this month. Doherty was heavily criticized in the English defeat for his role in Jack Grealish's strike.

Seamus Coleman misses out due to injury.

Jason Knight, Jayson Molumby, Kasey McAteer, Evan Ferguson, Adam Idah, Troy Parrott, Sammie Szmodics, and Chiedozie Ogbene provide forward cover, while Callum Robinson will miss out.

Ireland will play at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Thursday, 10 October, and at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium the following Sunday.
