Paul O'Connell has lauded Peter O'Mahony's decision to extend his tenure with Munster.
O'Mahony's future was uncertain post-World Cup amid swirling rumours hinting at a potential move to France. However, the 34-year-old Ireland captain opted for continuity by penning a new one-year deal with his beloved Munster.
A Cork native, O'Mahony boasts an impressive track record, having graced the field for his home province on over 182 occasions, donned the Irish jersey 105 times, and represented the British & Irish Lions in four matches throughout his illustrious career.
On the domestic front, the seasoned veteran clinched two league titles with Munster and contributed to Ireland's five Six Nations triumphs. Notably, he led both Munster and Ireland to URC and Six Nations glory, respectively, in the past year.
O'Connell, offering his insights on O'Mahony's commitment to Munster, said to the Irish Examiner, “I think it’s great for us (Ireland) as well. He’s one of those guys; like Johnny Sexton before him, he’s seen the pictures a lot, so he makes very good decisions," as reported by the Irish Examiner.
Despite O'Mahony's contract renewal, stiff competition awaits him in the Irish squad over the coming year. Emerging talents such as Ryan Baird, Tom Ahern, and others are now contending for spots in Ireland's back row.
Acknowledging the intensified competition, O'Connell noted, “It’s funny; it’s a really competitive position now, number six. Obviously, Ryan Baird has established himself with Leinster over the last few months. Tom Ahern down in Munster has done a good job as well. Cian Prendergast up in Connacht has been doing well, and you have Nick Timoney, who can play there up in Ulster."
"So it’s actually a really competitive position. It’s fantastic that he’s signed on for another year, and he’s going to face some stiff competition from some of the guys that are coming through now.”
