‘No excuse’ – Welsh rugby club considering life ban for fan who threw beer over Irish referee

CARDIFF BLUES are considering banning a supporter for life after he was captured on camera hurling a beer at Irish touch judge George Clancy.

The fan was removed from the stadium following the incident during a Pro14 clash with Glasgow on Saturday night.

The man, wearing a Blues jersey, was widely condemned on social media after TV cameras picked him up throwing his drink at the highly respected Irish official.

Cardiff Blues are now planning further action against the supporter, who they said will not be “welcome back at the club for the foreseeable future.”

Chief executive Richard Holland said: “The incident was dealt with pretty swiftly and efficiently by our stewarding and security team and the individual concerned was ejected from the ground.

“I spoke to George Clancy after the game and apologised on behalf of the club and he appreciated and accepted that.

“It’s an extremely serious incident and the individual concerned won’t be welcome back at the ground for the foreseeable future.

“We will assess the situation and deal with it in the appropriate manner.

"At this stage, a life ban is a serious consideration.

“It doesn’t look good at all. There is no place for this kind of thing in rugby and such behaviour will not be tolerated.

“You can’t condone it. There is no excuse for it.”

He added: “We will make a decision in due course and we will be taking the necessary action.”

The incident largely overshadowed what was a thrilling 20-19 win for Glasgow at Cardiff Arms Park.

Blues fly half Steve Shingler missed a straightforward penalty from 30 yards in the last minute which would have sealed a narrow victory for his side.
