Niamh Fahey has signed an extended contract with Liverpool

Liverpool Women's captain Niamh Fahey has signed an extended contract with the club today. The Ireland player has already played 106 appearances for the Reds.

The 35-year-old began her career playing for Salthill Devon, a club based in Galway, Ireland. Shortly after a successful loan spell with Galway, the Ireland centurion signed for English side Arsenal.

Fahey and Arsenal won several domestic titles during her time at the club and then she made the move across London to Chelsea. The Ireland defender went on to win another Women's Super League and reached the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League with Chelsea.

After spells abroad in France, the Galway native made a move back to England to sign for Liverpool. In 2020, Fahey captained the club to the FA Women’s Championship title in 2022. She also helped the club stay in the top division this year by finishing seventh.

"It was an easy decision, and I'm delighted to extend my contract at this fantastic club - I couldn't imagine being anywhere else," said Fahey on the club's website.

"I'm already massively excited for next season. I've been here five years, seen a lot of changes, but the position we're in now as a club is really exciting, and the future looks really, really bright.

"I'm delighted to be a part of it and keep pushing the club higher up the table," she added.

Liverpool boss Matt Beard added he was delighted to retain the services of the Galwegian: "Niamh's a fantastic person, a fantastic leader, and her performance levels on the pitch have stayed consistently high for club and country. "She's our captain, and we're delighted she's decided to extend her contract."

Fahey's next mission is to have a successful debut World Cup with Ireland. The 106-capped international has been included in Vera Pauw's side for the upcoming summer friendlies.

She added in her statement today, "It’s a big summer ahead for the girls in green, our first-ever major finals down in Australia and New Zealand. It’s a historic moment, and hopefully, I'll be part of that final squad heading there."

Ireland will play Zambia (June 22), France (July 6), and Colombia (July 14) before their World Cup tournament kicks off on July 20 against co-hosts Australia.
