Our tipster Karl Hedley tells you where to put your money this week
WEDNESDAY
GOODWOOD
2-30 NEPTUNE INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT GORDON STAKES (GROUP 3) – 1 M 4 F
Somewhat was considered as a rank outsider when lining up to contest the Coral Eclipse at Sandown. He defied his huge price to finish in third place in front of the likes of Kingston Hill, The Fugue and Night Of Thunder. That was a huge effort and now that he drops down in grade, he has to be of obvious interest. Mark Johnston must be confident that he will stay this extra couple of furlongs and with the stable in red hot form the hint has to be followed.
Snow Sky is another that faces a drop back in grade having failed to shine at Royal Ascot. Sir Michael Stoute has won this race four times since the turn of the millennium and he has be considered the likeliest threat.
Red Galileo exceeded expectations when fifth in the Epsom Derby and with Ryan Moore on board he too warrants consideration. Somewhat deserves to get his head in front and he can make his presence known amongst the weakest opposition he has faced in quite some time.
5-25 TURF CLUB HANDICAP – 7 FURLONGS
Little Shambles is the only three year old running in this race and she gets all of the allowances from her rivals. She looks to have an ideal position in stall nineteen as she like so many of her stable mates is an out and out front runner. Joe Fanning has partnered her to both of her two previous career wins and a return to this faster ground should see her firmly in the mix.
Bravo Echo is a course and distance specialist that still remains well handicapped on the best of his old form. Like the selection he is drawn high and is reunited with Louis Steward who was the last jockey to win on him. If over his exertions from Ascot he should be on the premises.
Piceno is another rival who likes to race prominently and he too can make the frame. Little Shambles is far from exposed and is the type that Mark Johnston does well with. She has to be respected off bottom weight here.
THURSDAY
2-35 QATAR BLOODSTOCK RICHMOND STAKES - 6 FURLONGS
Ivawood created a favourable impression when winning on debut at Sandown for Richard Hannon. He then landed a few tidy bets by going in again when upped significantly in grade to contest the Portland Stakes at Newmarket a few weeks later. He won by a comfortable two and a half lengths to see off the likes of Jungle Cat and Mubtaghaa and if they line up in opposition he should be able to confirm the form.
Ahlan Emarati took a step forward when finishing second behind Kool Kompany at The Curragh on his most recent start. He still managed to see off the highly regarded War Envoy and Cappella Sansavero and he looks the most likely danger. Louie De Palma and Moonraker face their toughest opposition to date and both may struggle to trouble the main protagonists.
Connections are harbouring Classic ambitions for Ivawood next season and he will need to win with authority here in order to fulfil those lofty expectations. Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon have a decent record at this track and Ivawood ought to enhance it further.
FRIDAY
3-40 BETFRED KING GEORGE STAKES (GROUP 2) – 5 FURLONGS
Extortionist may have taken a couple of runs to put himself right for this campaign, but now that he has found his true level of form he ought to confirm form with several of these re-opposing rivals. He has already seen off the likes of Wind Fire, Kingsgate Native and Monsieur Joe this year and with Ryan Moore keeping the ride he can do so again.
Take Cover returned to form with a bang at Newmarket last time and on a strict form line with the likes of Kingsgate Native and Monsieur Joe, there ought to be nothing between him and the selection. Take Cover ran well at this meeting last year and with Andrea Atzeni scheduled to ride they look the main danger.
Extortionist is still only a three year old and it is possible that there is further improvement to come. Should the ground stay on the fast side he should prove difficult to beat.
