MEATH GAA say they're saddened by the news of the passing of the county’s 1967 All-Ireland winning captain Peter Darby.

Darby (84) was part of Meath's 1-9 to 0-9 victory over Cork in 1967 football final and became the third Meath captain to lift the Sam Maguire at the time.

The Meath legend also won titles for Meath in hurling.

He was captain of the only Trim team to win the Keegan Cup in 1962 having already won 5 SHC medals with the club in 1955, 56, 57, 59 and ’60. He scored 4-2 in the 1956 SHC Final while still a teenager.

He also won 3 Leinster SFC medals in 1964, ’66 and ’67.

In a tweet, Meath GAA tweeted: "Meath GAA offers its condolences to the friends and family of Peter Darby. Peter captained Meath to the 1967 All-Ireland SFC. He was Guest of Honour at the county SFC Final in 1997, and in 2017, he was inducted into the county’s Hall of Fame. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal."

The Trim native also led the team on their historic trip to Australia in the Spring of 1968 where they won all 5 of their games.

Peter Darby also became a Meath senior selector when they lost the 1970 All-Ireland final to Kerry two year after this

His GAA career involved volunteering as Trim chairman and county board vice-chairman. He was inducted into the Meath GAA hall of fame in 2017
