Jason Doherty, the Mayo footballer, has announced his retirement from inter-county football. However, the 33-year-old will continue to play for his club, Burrishoole, in the Mayo Intermediate Championship.
Doherty's impressive career saw him make a total of 132 appearances. He scored 6-49 in 62 championship games and 11-104 in 70 league matches. His achievements were recognised with an All-Star nomination in 2017. Doherty participated in three All-Ireland finals and also made a substitute appearance in 2013. His final inter-county match was against Dublin in this summer's All-Ireland quarter-final.
In his retirement statement, Doherty expressed his gratitude for the chance of representing his home county and acknowledged the support he received. He remarked, "Playing for Mayo has been a huge honor for me since I first wore the jersey as a Mayo minor in 2007. I am incredibly thankful for the experiences and memories I've gained over the past 13 years."

"There were so many ups and downs along the way, but I feel incredibly lucky to have shared a dressing room with a bunch of highly driven, ambitious and talented guys who have now become friends for life. "There are so many people who helped me along the way, including my club Burrishoole, the management teams who trusted me to wear the green and red jersey and every teammate I've has since 2011 who motivated me to max out on my efforts to reach a shared goal."
Mayo manager Kevin McStay offered his own tribute, highlighting Doherty's dedication and sacrifice for the team during his 12-year tenure with the county
"He was also prepared to sacrifice himself for the team. He gave everything in 2023, when he recovered from his second serious injury to play for Mayo, but from talking to him at length, I respect his decision to step away now as he feels the time is right. Those who remain behind him are better players and men for having played with Jason Doherty."
