Male Inter-County captains back female players 'improved welfare campaign'

A group of male senior captains representing inter-county teams across the country have called upon the GAA to show their support for female players in their pursuit of improved welfare standards.

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) has released an open letter on behalf of the 68 male senior inter-county team captains, expressing their solidarity with the recent actions taken by ladies football and camogie teams.

Ladies football and camogie panels recently made a significant statement by announcing their intention to play the remainder of the 2023 championship "under protest." In a landmark press conference held in Dublin, players outlined their grievances and called for the implementation of an agreed charter that would enhance the welfare and care standards they receive.

The GPA's statement, in its entirety, states:

"To the leadership and management of the GAA,

"We, the 68 captains of the male senior inter-county teams, wish to convey our unwavering support for our female counterparts and stand together #UnitedForEquality. Consequently, we urge you to collaborate with the Camogie Association, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, and the Gaelic Players Association to engage in discussions regarding the necessary measures to establish minimum welfare and care standards for female players by 2024. It is unreasonable to expect them to wait any longer.

"We reject the notion that this matter falls solely within the purview of the two female governing bodies, as has been the response thus far. One of the GAA's core values is that of Community Identity, with community being the heart of our Association. Drawing from our own communities, we understand that when our neighbors face challenges or require assistance, the local GAA club steps forward to offer support.

"We are aware that our female inter-county colleagues within the Gaelic games community are in need of assistance. They require aid in accessing fundamental necessities such as medical and nutritional support, facilities, and financial assistance to cover travel expenses.

"Will you uphold the value of community or let this opportunity for positive change slip away? In the GAA we cherish and love, there can only be one response to this question.

"Sincerely,

"The captains of the senior inter-county football and hurling squads (2023)"
