LONDON IRISH community coaches will travel to the US this week to run a rugby camp along with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and the Essex County Youth Bulldogs.
The 'spring-break vacation’ camp will mark the launch of the Wolfhounds and Bulldogs becoming London Irish Community Club Partners.
The sport is becoming increasingly popular in America and Premiership clubs have played a key role in the development and promotion of rugby in the country.
While this is London Irish’s first camp being run on American soil, it follows the Premiership Rugby coaching delegation which travelled to New York last summer along with four members of Premiership Rugby’s Community Team – Twelve coaches, one from each of the Premiership clubs, worked with 1,800 school children in Queens, Brooklyn, Harlem, Staten Island and the Bronx.
Wayne Morris, Head of Community at Premiership Rugby, said that last summer’s trip was “a great success” and that “it is fantastic that London Irish are returning to America next week to continue to educate and develop rugby in the USA”, while London Irish’s Head of Community, Ben Lee, said the Essex County Youth setup had made great developmental strides in the UK and that the partnership was perfect to educate and develop young players in Boston, somewhat of a hotbed for the sport in the continent.
Lee said that “the core values of rugby can be applied to all walks of life and the language of the sport is global” and that in the global village “it is important that big name teams, like London Irish, with a great history and talent, support overseas development of the game we love.”
