Results

Intermediate Championship Round 1 11/07/2015 St Brendan’s 1-8 vs 1-6   Moindearg

With a strong wind blowing from the club house to the bottom goals, Moindearg opened the scoring with a point from centre forward Alan Dunne. Brendan’s responded two minutes later through James Minogue, before Moindearg regained the lead with a point from play. Thady Gavin drew the team level for the second time and then John Bo Daly was then presented with a goal opportunity, but was saved by the keeper. Dunne then added a free with Gary Gillespie adding another. Daly opened his account with a free before Gillespie brought the first half to a close with his second point of the match.

Half time St Brendans 0-3 Moindearg 0-5

Brendan’s would have been delighted with the score line considering the strength of the breeze but knew that they need to capitalize in the second half. While there were a few wide’s, one from Daly with only the goal keeper to beat, Minogue showed the way with a fine long range point. David Dunne, whose surging runs were a cause of constant concern for Moindearg, also got on the score sheet before Gavin added his second of the day. With the lead, Brendan’s looked to press home their advantage, but Dunne levelled the scores with his third of the day. With scoring a premium, Moindearg blew the tie open with ten minutes to go when Michael McMenimin scored a goal following an intricate hand passing move through the Brendan’s defence.

Brendan’s kept their composure, and responded in true style, as Dannie O’Connor played Daly in on goal, who this time made no mistake to finish with aplomb. Niall Campbell added a point, and when Daly intercepted a short kick out to tap over a point with a minute to go, only a goal could save Moindearg now. The thought they had a penalty, however, referee John Doyle correctly ruled that the infringement was outside the area, with the corresponding free kick cleared.

Over the match, Brendan’s were the better team and they would have been gutted had their efforts not been rewarded. Also, given a suburb team performance, it is difficult to pick out individuals.

Brendan’s – Ben Small, Mark Tutty, Liam Doyle, Rob Leonard, Barry Lydon, Ryan Jones, Denis Murphy, Thady Gavin, James Minogue, David Dunne, Niall Campbell, Liam Sharkey, Ciaran Mossey, John Bo Daly, Liam McHugh. Subs – Dannie O Connor for Sharkey, Shane Healy for Murphy.
