LOI contributes €164.7m annually to Irish economy says report

A report from BDO Ireland this week announced that the League of Ireland contributes €164.7 million annually to the Irish economy. The findings were part of the company's Economic Impact Assessment of the League of Ireland (LOI).

The report also revealed that, in 2023, the league contributed an estimated €40 million to the Exchequer through taxes.

The LOI's total attendance rose from 826,086 to 966,994 over the year, marking a 19.5% increase from 2022. The 2024 figures are expected to surpass these numbers, with substantial interest shown during the league’s final weekend.

Austin Hickey, Director at BDO, said in a press release, "BDO is delighted to release this landmark report, which reflects the League of Ireland’s growing importance to the Irish economy and its local communities.

"The report showcases not only the financial contributions made by the league but also the social benefits, such as community engagement programmes and youth development through football academies. The continued growth in both men's and women's football speaks to the success of clubs in fostering a deeper connection with fans and delivering long-term value to society."

Mark Scanlon, League of Ireland Director, added via the same press release, "This report from BDO Ireland shows how the League of Ireland plays a crucial role through multiple dimensions, bringing significant contributions to Irish society.

"Whether through direct or indirect employment, infrastructure investment, or supporter spending on travel, merchandise, and hospitality, the League of Ireland has a major role to play in the Irish economy."
