LIVERPOOL MANAGER Arne Slot has said that his side were ‘lucky’ to pull off a late 1-0 against Paris St Germain last night, after the 2019 champions weathered a difficult fixture in the French capital.
Liverpool looked to be on the back foot for most of last night’s final 16 draw, facing relentless opposition from PSG’s formidable forward line, including Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola.
Slot credited the performance of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker with keeping his team level, before a late goal from substitute Harvey Elliott put the Merseyside team in front in the 87th minute.
Praising Alisson as ‘the best keeper in the world’, the Liverpool manager added: “We’re the lucky ones, that’s clear for everyone. I think they (PSG) were the much better team today, especially in the first half, three or four big, big chances.
“In the second half, they were still the better team, still had a lot of shots on target but they were mainly from outside the box.
“That’s why Alisson still had to make a lot of big saves. I have had some very good players as a manager but never the best goalkeeper in the world until now. He showed that he is the best in the world today. To go away with a win here was probably a bit more than we deserved.”
Alisson managed an incredible nine saves from a barrage of 27 shots against a side who have scored 40 goals in their last 10 games. He told TNT Sports that the game was ‘the performance of my life’, having broken Pepe Reina’s record of 22 clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool were also helped by the fact that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had a goal ruled as offside by VAR in the first half. The side were also lucky that Ibrahima Konate did not receive a red card after a hefty challenge on PSG’s Bradley Barcola.
