LIVERPOOL'S impressive performance this season, under new manager Arne Slot, has put them in an enviable position. They need only one point to win the title. Their closest competitors, Arsenal, can at best match Liverpool's current 79 points if they win their next five games. Liverpool faces Tottenham on Sunday, where a draw will secure their victory.

Despite having 19 titles, Liverpool won only two in the last three and a half decades (1989/90 and 2019/20). Last year, they replaced long-time manager Jurgen Klopp with the relatively unknown Dutchman Arne Slot, and key players Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk were expected to leave as their contracts expired. However, Slot proved a worthy successor, Salah and Van Dijk extended their contracts by two years, and while Liverpool have had a great season, the same cannot be said for their usual rivals who have struggled throughout. Manchester United is projected to experience their worst season in Premier League history, while Manchester City is also underperforming.

For at least the last two centuries, there has been a significant connection between Ireland and Liverpool, primarily due to geography. Many took the ferry and emigrated from Dublin to Merseyside for work and eventually settled down to start families. However, the connection is not merely one-way. Recent polling data from The Irish Times (2020) shows that nearly half of Irish football fans support Liverpool.

This Sunday, many fans will be watching as Liverpool strives to match Manchester United's twenty league wins, with the possibility of surpassing them next year.
