Liverpool fan club condemns vile chant about injured Ireland captain Seamus Coleman

A LIVERPOOL fans club has condemned a video showing footage of football supporters mocking Seamus Coleman's gruesome injury.

A video taunting the Republic of Ireland captain appeared on social media in the aftermath of Saturday's Merseyside derby, which Liverpool comfortably won 3-1.

Manager Jurgen Klopp and skipper Jordan Henderson offered best wishes to Coleman in the match's programme.

Football fans across Ireland and Britain were also quick to wish Coleman the best, following the Everton man's season-ending leg break last week.

But some did not share those sentiments and were filmed mocking the injured 28-year-old.

They can be heard to sing ‘How’s your leg Seamus Coleman? I hope you never play again’ in the video.

The clip shows dozens of football fans singing the altered version of the Sixty Grand song, which Everton fans dedicated to Coleman after his double leg fracture.

Les Lawson, chairman of the Merseyside branch of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club, said in a statement that the vile chant was not representative of the wider Liverpool fan base.

He said: “Straight away after the injury everyone was hoping he makes a speedy recovery. It was a horrific tackle.

“It can easily be one of your own players and you should never mock a player who gets hurt like that.

“The majority of Liverpool fans wish him well and hope he is back to playing again soon.

“I remember, despite what was claimed, that when Alan Smith broke his leg and was stretchered off at Anfield the whole ground stood and applauded him.”

The video attracted a raft of criticism on Twitter.

"As a proud Irish man I am disgusted at a few Liverpool fans mocking Seamus Coleman. It is absolutely disgusting. Cop on and grow up," wrote one fan.

A Reds supporter said: "They're not Liverpool fans or fans of football at all. Scumbags. Real fans wish Coleman a speedy recovery."

Everton missed long-serving right back Coleman on Saturday as they were soundly beaten 3-1 by their local rivals at Anfield.

England U21 international Mason Holgate came in for the injured Irishman but struggled against Liverpool’s attack.
