Katie Taylor trilogy confirmed for Madison Square Garden this July

SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT Irish boxing champion Katie Taylor will fight a trilogy bout at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 11 this year. Her opponent, Amanda Serrano, was defeated by split decision in 2022 and this marks the first rematch between the pair since that time.

Taylor is Ireland’s pound-for-pound undisputed super lightweight champion with a record of 24 wins and 1 loss, 6 of which were by knockout. By contrast, Serrano has secured a record of 47 wins to 3 losses, 31 of which were by knockout.

The highly anticipated fight comes as part of the first all women’s professional boxing card ever to be held at Madison Square Garden. Taylor and Serrano’s April 2022 bout also made history as the first women’s fight to headline MSG.

In their second rematch in as many years, all Katie Taylor’s undisputed super lightweight belts are at risk. If she was worried, however, the 38-year-old Bray fighter didn’t show it, telling media:

“I’m 2 and 0 against Amanda, but it’s obviously a very special rivalry that delivers every time we step in the ring so I think it’s only right that we have the trilogy.

“The atmosphere for the first fight was amazing and I’m sure it won’t be any different this time around. The numbers that got to see the last fight in November were incredible so hopefully those people will want to tune in for the trilogy as well and we can deliver another great fight.”

Serrano, by contrast, sounded as though she already wanted to put psychological pressure on her opponent out, saying: “I’m disappointed that Katie Taylor did not keep her word and make the trilogy 12 three-minute rounds, equal to the men.

“This is a record-setting payday for both of us, and we owed it to the fans to honour the handshake deal we made. She didn’t… Make no mistake, every time we share the ring, it is war, and I know Friday 11 July will be the greatest yet because I will finally get the official W I deserve.”
