UPON reading a piece in the Irish Independent recently, former St Gabriels forward Tom Conneelly popped into my head.
The article was about the toughest men ever to play hurling and featured renowned legends of the game such as Christy Ring, Eddie Keher and John Doyle.
But some of the men mentioned in their XV couldn’t compare to the club men we’ve had over here, like Conneely, for example.
He got nine stitches in his head with 11 minutes to go in the 1986 London senior county final against Desmonds.
Gabriels were three points down, but Theresa Burke bandaged him up, he went corner forward and scored 1-4, and Garbriels won by two points.
Conneely is a prime example of the tough competitors we've had over here and he makes corner forward in my team of London's toughest ever hurlers.
