Irish teenager O'Brien set for Lyon transfer

Ireland's Jake O'Brien could be on his way to France to join the renowned Olympique Lyonnais. O’Brien (22) who is currently at Premier League side Crystal Palace is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move to Lyon.

French publication L'Équipe has said that O'Brien is seen as a replacement for the outgoing Castello Lukeba, who is set to join RB Leipzig this summer.

The Cork native is highly regarded at Selhurst Park after successful loan spells at English side Swindon Town and Belgian side RWD Molenbeek, and is seen as one for the future.

The Irish defender has also played for Ireland U-21 boss Jim Crawford this year. O'Brien started both legs in their play-off defeat to Israel just a little under a year ago.

The Palace player had been a €1 million target for Lyon's Ligue 1 rivals Lorient earlier this summer, but it now appears that Lyon has won the race for O'Brien.

His former club, Cork City, is set to receive a six-figure sell-on windfall from the deal, according to the Irish examiner.
