Irish soccer players in Britain: Chris McCann keeps Wigan's FA Cup dreams alive

Chris McCann scored the opener for Wigan Athletic over the weekend in their 2-1 FA Cup win over Cardiff City and Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick for Celtic against St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League.

FA CUP

Dubliner Chris McCann scored the opener for Wigan Athletic to maintain their hopes of retaining the FA Cup in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City to reach the quarter-finals.

After the victory on Saturday McCann said: "It's absolutely fantastic. You've seen how much it meant to everyone today - each and every player - and to our fans as well.

"We're one of the last eight left in it now and this morning we were in the last 16, so it's a great opportunity for us to defend the cup."

John O'Shea put in a strong performance and captained Sunderland as they beat Southampton 1-0 to reach the last eight in the competition.

Elsewhere, Andy Reid assisted the opening goal for Nottingham Forest, but Sheffield United scored twice in second half stoppage time beating the away side 3-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

CHAMPIONSHIP

The Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill was present at Loftus Road to watch visitors Reading claim three points and defeat Queens Park Rangers 3-1. Kevin Doyle netted against his former club, while Alex Pearce scored for the Royals.

Keith Treacy scored the equaliser after coming on as a substitute in Burnley's 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. The hosts took the lead with a goal from Tokelo Rantie, but promotion-chasing Burnley could not score again and were held to a draw for a second time in this tie this season.

Millwall's David Forde saved a second-half penalty from Lukas Jutkiewicz early in the first half, allowing the home side to score the equaliser for a 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

LEAGUE ONE

Top of the table Brentford retain their number one spot after securing a 3-1 win over Crewe Alexandra, with Alan Judge scoring two long range goals in either half.

Ireland Under-21 on-loan midfielder Samir Carruthers was on target as Milton Keynes Dons defeated Oldham Athletic 2-1.

Defender Derrick Williams netted his debut goal with a header for Bristol City in a 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers.

LEAGUE TWO

Eoin Doyle stole the opener opener and Jay O'Shea fired twice as Chesterfield defeated Torquay United 3-1 to remain top of the table.

Former Ireland international David Connolly was on target for Oxford United - his second goal in four games - securing a 3-0 win over Mansfield Town.

Exeter City recorded a 3-2 away win at Southend United with Jimmy Keohane scoring the first goal.

SCOTLAND

Anthony Stokes impressed for Celtic, scoring a hat trick in a 3-0 home win against St Johnstone.

Aberdeen kept retain second place after Adam Rooney netted a late penalty at St Mirren, his third goal in four games.
