Ireland men’s sevens captain Harry McNulty has retired from sevens rugby this week.
McNulty represented Ireland 140 times over nine years. He was also a key member of two Olympic teams in Tokyo and Paris, serving as captain for the latter.
He was part of an Irish side that won bronze at the Sevens World Cup in Cape Town in 2022.
Posting on Instagram this week, McNulty admitted that the journey from being unaware his mother had signed him up for the 7th-grade program to becoming a two-time Olympian with Ireland was a wild ride.
"Little did I know in 2015, when my mom signed me up for an open day for the 7s program, it would all turn out like this," he said.
"From Bosnia to Paris, it’s been a pretty wild ride, and one that I will cherish forever. I’ve travelled the world and made friends in every corner of the planet.
"Core status qualification, 2 x World Cups, 2 x Olympics, captaincy, and memories that last a lifetime. What a ride!"
McNulty, in the same statement, admitted that while this part of the journey may be over, he is excited to see what the future holds. He also thanked several parties for helping him with his career.
"For now, the boots may hang up, but the door remains open, and I’m excited for what the future holds," he added. "It’s the right time to put my energy into the next stage of my life. I won’t be far from the game I love, as I am starting a media role with @svnsseries for this coming season."
