Irish punter wins a sensational €578k off a €20 bet at Cheltenham Festival

THAT OLD familiar saying about the luck of the Irish rang true again at Cheltenham Festival.

It follows the news that an unnamed Irish punter left the festival over half a million euro richer following an epic fourfold accumulator win.

The lucky punter placed the bet in a Shannon branch of Paddy Power back in December, when retail outlets briefly reopened across Ireland.

Three months on and they were celebrating after the €20 fourfold accumulator came in, returning a jaw-dropping €578,340 windfall.

He backed Honeysuckle for the Champion Hurdle at 16/1, Bob Olinger in the Ballymore at 20/1, Put The Kettle On in the Champion Chase at 8/1 and Minella Indo in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 8/1.

After scoring the crucial victories needed on the opening three days of the festival, it all came down to the Gold Cup, with Minella Indo’s victory for trainer Henry de Bromhead securing the epic payday.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power said: "There will be a socially distanced celebration somewhere in Shannon tonight courtesy of an incredible bet placed more than three months ago.

"After a miserable 2020 I could only think about avoiding Zoom calls and burning banana bread, let alone having the foresight to pull off a life-changing Cheltenham punt.

"You have to take your hat off. It's a sublime punt and tops off a great week for Irish punters."

Call it fate, call it expert horse racing knowledge, it all added up to one memorable win for the Irish at Cheltenham.
