Presenter Colin Murray quits radio show over News Corp takeover

RADIO and TV presenter Colin Murray is stepping down from his role at TalkSport following the sports radio station’s takeover by News Corporation.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Co. Down native said “it is the inevitable future working relationship between TalkSport and The Sun that has made my position unsustainable”.

Murray is an avid Liverpool FC fan, with many of the club’s fans refusing to buy or even acknowledge The Sun – owned by News Corporation – since their controversial coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

The paper published false allegations that Liverpool supporters picked the pockets of the dying and urinated on police during the tragedy in which 96 football fans lost their lives.

Although The Sun were finally forced to apologise in 2012 when an independent report proved their allegations to be well wide of the mark, the paper has been boycotted by the majority of Merseyside ever since.

Murray, who turned down a contract extension offer until 2019, ended his tweet with the message ‘#JFT96’, a reference to the 96 fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

Murray presents the weekday late morning show for TalkSport, who were taken over last month, and will broadcast his last show for them on September 2, 2016.
