Aaron McKenna remains undefeated in his boxing career

TOTTENHAM Hotspur stadium was abuzz Saturday night as the 25-year-old rising star of Irish boxing secured a 119-108, 117-109 and 118-108 win against Englishman Liam Smith. Fighting in the undercard of the historic Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn fight, McKenna managed to continue his winning streak 20-0. This was the most important fight of the young Monaghan man’s career, facing off against former WBO light-middleweight champion Liam Smith (36). Around 67,000 spectators cheered on, as the event was streamed to 200 countries.
For the first few rounds it seemed an even fight. McKenna delivered a right hook in the sixth round, and despite Smith's usual form on the inside, McKenna managed to land several uppercuts. McKenna had a point deducted for using his elbow but didn’t allow this to affect him.
In the seventh round, both fighters traded punches in the centre of the ring. When McKenna found space, he maintained distance and landed a few straight hits, keeping Smith at bay.
McKenna continued to dominate and in the 12th round, a left hook to the side caused Smith to fall to his knees. McKenna landed more punches, including a significant strike to Smith's head.
Smith showed resilience and fought back off the ropes, but his defence came up short. McKenna won by a unanimous decision by the judges.
In the end the Irishman proved to be too quick and agile for the older Liverpudlian. Speaking after his win to BBC Radio 5 Sport, the boxer appeared bruised but joyous stating; “This is the stuff of dreams. I finally got my opportunity and what a time to show it in front of all these people. This has been a long time coming because I have dedicated my whole life to the sport”.
