Irish golf pro Shane Lowry wins European shot of the year for incredible birdie

IT WAS the shot that sealed his victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational - and now it has won Shane Lowry an award for European Shot of the Year.

Lowry's shot on the final hole of the competition in Ohio in August 2015 looked like it could scupper his dreams but a cleverly executed wedge shot left him with a gimme birdie.

"It's a huge honour to win European Tour Shot of the Year, it's a shot I will never forget," 28-year-old Offaly man Lowry told golfing website European Tour, who host the competition which is decided by a public vote.

Lowry beat the likes of Rory McIlroy and Miguel Ángel Jiménez to win the award.

"Thanks to everyone who voted. I'm looking forward to another great season in 2016," he said.

"I can't wait to get back to competitive golf next week in Malaysia when I represent Europe in the EurAsia Cup.'

The European Shot of the Year award was voted for on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by golf fans around the continent.
