Euro 2016: Irish fan jailed in France for assault in Paris train station

A REPUBLIC of Ireland fan has been jailed for eight months in France after being convicted of armed assault during Euro 2016.

David Hunt, from Ballinteer, Dublin, attacked his victim with an un unidentifeid weapon in Gare du Nord train station in Paris on June 15, two days after Ireland’s opening game against Sweden.

The 35-year-old was tried before the Paris Criminal Court two days later on June 17, which is common practice in France and is consistent with similar crimes carried out by fans of other nations.

His family are believed to have been informed of his situation only last week, but exact details of the crime have not been disclosed by the French authorities as yet.

The news comes in the wake of the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announcing her decision to award fans of both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with a ‘Medal of the City’ for their “exemplary sportsmanship” throughout their stay during the tournament.

Martin O’Neill’s men exited the tournament last Sunday following a 2-1 defeat to France, the host nation.
